- Distance: When you enter Skye over the bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh it is about a good hour drive to Milovaig.
- Wildlife & nature: Everywhere! We will just mention some special stuff for you. Pooltiel House is close to Neist Point (10 minute drive, two hour walk) where you can spot the minke whale, the killer whale or the basking shark straight from the rocks, merrily basking away. Some people filmed the minke from their kayak a bit north from Neist Point at Waternish! At Neist Point you will find all kinds of sea birds, like the Gannet who throws himself into the water like a dive bomber. On the other side of Loch Dunvegan you can find the Corral Beaches. With a 45 minute drive you will reach the Fairy Pools on the foot of the Cuillins. It has been covered by the BBC. You can spot deer, seals and, with some luck, otters and sea eagles on the Isle of Skye. When the ground work was going on for the project in 2010, we had a couple of eagles over the site for several weeks! Our engineer even saw a whale jumping out of the water of Loch Pooltiel while he was busy on site. And there is of course, juist over the water of Loch Pooltiel, the impressive cliff of Dunvegan Head. Depending on the time of year and the weather you can see the sunlight creating beautiful effects on the hills of Dunvegan Head and its rock face or impressive waterfalls that can even be blown back over the edge of the cliff.
- Photographing: Bring your point and shoot or your DSLR and your lenses. We are sure you will have a lot of opportunities. Just to give you an idea: National Geographic organizes in 2013 a Scotland Photo Adventure. Several days are reserved for visiting Skye.
- Shops, pubs, cafe's: In Glendale (10 minute drive) there is a village shop, tearoom and, during the season, the Red Roof Cafe Gallery. Dunvegan has some more shops (20 minute drive). In Portree there is a big Coop (50 minute drive).
- Restaurants: The famous Three Chimneys (15 minute drive) for exclusive dining or the family friendly The Old School restaurant in Dunvegan (20 minutes). Fancy a fish & chips? Try Stein Inn in Waternish (30 minute drive). And there is of course everything you may want in Portree, including a curry and restaurants that specialise in sea food.
- Kids: Dunvegan Castle (20 minutes), Corral Beaches (25 minutes), the dino prints on An Corran beach (Staffin), Orbost with its black beach (25 minutes), the swimming pool in Portree (50 minutes) or just bring your wets suits and visit the beach of Loch Pooltiel. In Portree you can find all kinds of boat-trips that take you out to visit the wildlife at sea. When you see or meet a whale, dolphin or basking shark it is an experience that will definitely stay with you and your family.
- Whiskey: Visit the famous Talisker distillery (35 minutes)!
- Diving and snorkeling: The waters around Pooltiel House are beautiful and much appreciated by divers. Close by is the Meanish Pier which makes a good launch site if you want to go out for scuba diving or snorkelling.
- Boating and kayaking: explore Loch Pooltiel from the Meanish Pier.
- Walking: Yes, you can. There are lots of possibilities but Pooltiel House has some special features that make it easy for you. You just walk out to the end of the plot, turn left and follow the cliff. You will see some breathtaking scenery. If you want more, try the walk that leads you over Dunvegan Head, on the other side of Loch Pooltiel. There are cliffs there, that are reported to have a sheer drop of more than 1000 ft.
- Stars and Aurora Borealis (northern lights): At night, it gets really dark on Skye because there is hardly any light pollution. So, on a clear night you can see a lot of stars. Very impressive. And when conditions are favorable you can also spot the northern light. Spring and autumn of 2013 are described as very promising.
- Alternative accomodations: Pooltiel House is now available for holiday bookings. If you find it not available through our agent we can really recommend these two other cottages. Check them out here: Eilean Mor Cottage and Katie's Cottage are great!
